There are those destinations that look beautiful in photographs, and those that somehow exceed every expectation when you see them in person.
The Norwegian fjords belong firmly in the second category. It’s one of the world’s most spectacular voyages.
As your ship glides silently between towering cliffs, the scale of the landscape is difficult to comprehend. Waterfalls tumble down mountainsides out of nowhere, tiny villages cling to the shoreline, and snow-capped peaks rise above deep blue waters that seem untouched by time.
It’s not the kind of scenery you simply look at. It’s the kind of scenery you experience.
Many breathtaking Norwegian Fjord locations are best reached by sea, explaining their popularity with cruise enthusiasts. Rather than spending hours travelling between viewpoints by road or train, the scenery unfolds around you from the comfort of your ship as you sail deeper into some of the world’s most dramatic natural landscapes.
Every day brings something different. One morning might begin with mist hanging over a quiet fjord, while the afternoon reveals waterfalls cascading hundreds of metres down sheer rock faces. In port, charming coastal towns offer a glimpse into Norwegian culture, history, and everyday life.
The beauty of a fjord cruise is that it combines adventure and relaxation effortlessly. You can spend the morning exploring picturesque villages, take in panoramic mountain views during the afternoon, and then enjoy dinner while the scenery slowly drifts past your window.
Best Time to Cruise the Norwegian Fjords
The fjord season typically runs from May to September, with each month offering something slightly different.
May and early June bring fresh green landscapes, powerful waterfalls fed by melting snow, and fewer crowds. It’s often considered one of the most beautiful times to visit.
July and August offer the warmest temperatures and the longest days, making them ideal for travellers who enjoy outdoor activities and sightseeing.
September introduces hints of autumn colour to the mountainsides and often provides a quieter, more relaxed experience while still offering spectacular scenery.
For first-time visitors, June and July usually provide the best balance of comfortable weather, long daylight hours, and stunning landscapes.
What Ports Can You Expect to Visit?
Every itinerary is different, but every Norwegian Fjord cruise visit a selection of charming towns and iconic fjord destinations.
Bergen
Known as the gateway to the fjords, Bergen is famous for its colourful waterfront, historic Bryggen district and surrounding mountains.

Geiranger
One of Norway’s most famous fjords and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Expect dramatic cliffs, waterfalls and some of the most photographed scenery in the country.
Flam
A small village surrounded by towering mountains and deep fjords. It is home to the world-famous Flåm Railway, often considered one of the most scenic train journeys on Earth.
Alesund
Known for its distinctive Art Nouveau architecture, beautiful harbour, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the surrounding islands.
Stavanger
A vibrant coastal city that serves as a gateway to some of Norway’s most spectacular natural attractions, including the famous Pulpit Rock.
Depending on your itinerary, you may also visit smaller communities that offer an authentic glimpse into everyday life along Norway’s coastline.
What Is the Weather Like?
Norwegian weather can be unpredictable, even during summer.
Daytime temperatures during the cruise season normally range between 10°C and 22°C, depending on the region and time of year.
You might experience sunshine, mist, light rain, and blue skies all within the same day.
The weather is part of what makes the fjords so dramatic. Low clouds drifting through the mountains and mist rising from the water often create some of the most memorable views. When the sun hits one of the many waterfalls, it changes the entire atmosphere.
Travellers should plan for changing conditions rather than expecting consistently warm summer weather.
The Magic of the Midnight Sun
One of the most remarkable experiences on a Norwegian cruise is witnessing the midnight sun.
During summer, parts of Norway experience nearly continuous daylight, with the sun remaining above the horizon long into the night. Even in regions further south, daylight hours can stretch far beyond what many travellers are used to.
There is something unforgettable about standing on deck at 11pm, surrounded by mountains and fjords, while the landscape is still bathed in a soft golden glow.
The extended daylight also means more time to enjoy the scenery, excursions and outdoor experiences that make Norway such a special destination.
For many travellers, the midnight sun becomes one of the highlights of the entire journey.
What Should You Pack?
- A waterproof jacket
- Warm fleece or sweater
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Lightweight clothing for warmer afternoons
- Sunglasses
- A small daypack for excursions
- Camera or smartphone with plenty of storage
Even during summer, early mornings and evenings can feel surprisingly cool, especially when sailing through narrow fjords surrounded by mountains.
MSC Shore Excursions Worth Considering
The scenery is extraordinary from the ship, but shore excursions allow you to experience Norway up close.
The Flåm Railway
One of the most popular excursions in Norway, taking travellers through spectacular mountain landscapes, waterfalls and valleys.
Geiranger Viewpoints
Several excursions take visitors to elevated viewpoints overlooking the fjord, providing some of the most iconic views in Norway.
Pulpit Rock
A dramatic cliff rising over 600 meters above Lysefjord. The hike is challenging at 8 km, 3-5 hours, but very rewarding for active travellers.

Kayaking
For a unique perspective, kayaking allows you to explore sections of the fjords quietly and at water level.
Local Village Tours
Many smaller ports offer walking tours that showcase Norwegian history, culture and everyday life beyond the famous scenery.
Why Cruising Is the Best Way to See the Fjords
While Norway can certainly be explored by land, cruising offers a perspective that is difficult to replicate.
Glaciers shaped many of the fjords over thousands of years, creating landscapes that are best appreciated from the water. Ships can travel deep into these narrow waterways, bringing passengers directly into the heart of the scenery.
Instead of constantly packing, unpacking and travelling between destinations, your accommodation moves with you. Each morning brings a new view, a new port and a new adventure.
Some of the most breathtaking moments happen while sailing between destinations rather than while docked in port. Watching waterfalls tumble down mountainsides from your balcony or the open decks is an experience unique to cruising.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You See the Northern Lights on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise?
This is one of the most common questions I get asked, and the answer depends entirely on when you visit.
Most Norwegian fjord cruises operate during the summer months, when the days are long and the famous midnight sun can keep the sky bright well into the evening. While this creates a truly unique experience, it also means conditions aren’t really suitable for seeing the Northern Lights.
The Northern Lights are most commonly seen during the darker months between late autumn and early spring, late September to early April, when nights are long and skies are clear.
If seeing the Aurora Borealis is at the top of your bucket list, a dedicated Northern Lights itinerary during the winter season is usually a better choice than a traditional summer fjord cruise. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this, MSC does not offer any cruise to Norway during the winter months. Hopefully that will change with the release of the new season 2027/2028.
The good news? Summer fjord cruises offer their own magic. Watching the sun linger above the horizon late into the evening while surrounded by dramatic mountains and waterfalls is an unforgettable experience in its own right.
Are the Norwegian Fjords suitable for first-time cruisers?
Absolutely. The calm waters and incredible scenery make them one of the most popular cruise destinations for first-time travellers.
Do I need a balcony cabin?
Not necessarily, but many travellers enjoy having a private space to take in the scenery. Public decks also provide excellent viewing opportunities.
Will I see snow?
Depending on the season and location, snow can often still be seen on mountain peaks even during summer.
Is Norway expensive?
Norway is generally considered one of Europe’s more expensive destinations. However, meals and onboard amenities are already included when cruising, helping to manage costs.
How long should a Norwegian Fjords cruise be?
Seven to ten nights is considered ideal, providing enough time to experience multiple fjords and ports without feeling rushed.
Is the scenery really as good as in photos?
Most travellers would say it’s even better, and I agree. The scale, atmosphere, and constantly changing light are difficult to capture fully in photographs.
The Norwegian Fjords are one of those destinations that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
