How To Save Money On A Cruise

Cruising can be one of the most cost-effective vacations you’ll ever take, but only if you know where to spend and save your money without sacrificing the experience

Having worked in the cruise industry for many years, I have witnessed passengers spend extra on unnecessary items while others enjoyed incredible experiences without going over budget.

The good news? You don’t have to give up the things that make cruising unique in order to save money.

Here are a few strategies that can genuinely make a difference.

Book Early or Book Late

The two best times to book a cruise are as early as possible or at the very last minute. Early booking gets you the best cabin selection at the lowest price, and you only pay a deposit, and the rest you can pay as you save. Last-minute deals happen when ships aren’t sailing full and lines need to fill cabins quickly.

The risk with booking last minute is that you might not get to choose your cabin or cabin category, your dates need to be quite flexible, and instead of just a R3000 deposit, you likely need to pay in full. If you can live with that, the savings can be significant.

Be Flexible With Your Dates

School holidays and peak summer sailings are always more expensive. If you can travel in shoulder season, April to June or September to October in the Mediterranean, you’ll pay noticeably less for the same itinerary on the same ship.

Midweek departures are also often cheaper than weekend sailings. Slight adjustments to your dates can save you a surprising amount.

Choose Your Cabin Category Wisely

Not every upgrade is worth it. An inside cabin on a higher deck is often better value than a lower-deck ocean view cabin. A midship balcony is worth more than a forward balcony on a rough sea day.

This is exactly the kind of thing a good consultant will tell you: which cabin or experience is genuinely worth paying more for and which one isn’t. Don’t just go by cabin type, also look at the location on the ship.

Prepay What You Can Before You Sail

Your onboard account can creep up quickly if you’re not careful. Prepaying gratuities (Hotel Service Charge) before you sail is almost always cheaper than paying them onboard, but for South Africans, it’s already included in your booking/quote price.

Buying drink or specialty dining packages in advance offers significant discounts, sometimes 20-30% compared to purchasing them on the ship.

Watch For Promotions

Cruise lines run promotions regularly: free drink packages, onboard credit, reduced deposits, kids sail free deals, and many others.

Keeping track of these offers can be difficult, especially if you’re comparing multiple cruise lines and sailing dates.

This is often where working with a consultant can help.

Don’t Book Extras You Won’t Use

The all-inclusive drinks package sounds appealing, but if you’re not big drinkers, it might not pay for itself. A specialty dining package sounds great, but if you’re happy with the included main dining room and buffet, you don’t need it.

Be honest about how you actually spend your holiday and only pay for what you’ll genuinely use. I’d rather help you spend your money well than sell you a package that looks impressive on paper but doesn’t add value to your specific trip.

Take Advantage of Loyalty Perks

The MSC Voyagers Club offers discounts that stack with promotions, plus extra onboard credit, complimentary spa, specialty dining, and internet access on certain levels, as well as savings in the onboard shops. Depending on your status and the itinerary, there could be up to 20% discount on your cruise fare.

Best of all, MSC Voyagers Club membership is completely free.

Consider Repositioning Cruises

Repositioning cruises happen when ships move between regions, such as from Europe to the Caribbean or Mediterranean to South Africa for the winter season.

Main Dining Room

Because these voyages are often longer, usually 15-29 days, and involve fewer port stops, they are exceptional value compared to traditional itineraries.

If you have flexible travel dates and enjoy sea days, a repositioning cruise can be one of the most affordable ways to experience a premium ship.

The Bottom Line

Saving money on a cruise isn’t about finding the cheapest option and hoping for the best. It’s about knowing where the real value is, what’s worth paying for, what isn’t, and timing your booking well.

That’s exactly what I help my clients with: getting the most out of their cruise budget without compromising on the experience.
